The Amethyst is the birthstone for people born in February. Actually made from violet quartz, Amethyst's name come from ancient greece, derived from ἀ a- (meaning "not") and also μέθυστος méthystos (meaning "intoxicated"). It's violet color comes from iron impurities, also know as irradiation. Depending on the presence of trace elements, it's color can range from pinkish-purple, all the way to a very deep purple. Because Amethyst is made from Quartz, it has a complex lattice structure which helps give the mineral it's hardness. Which allows it to be made into jewelry with out the risk of breaking.

In ancient times Amethysts were believed to have a number of mystical properties. Greeks believed the stone would protect you from drunkenness, while medieval European soldiers believed the gemstone would protect the wearer in battle and keep them cool headed.
